Discount on Multiple Prints

Print prices in the "Shop" have shipping costs already included. If you are ordering 3 or more prints, I have created a discount for you of $10. This reflects the savings to me in shipping more than one print! When you check out, be sure to enter "Discount" when asked for a promo code. This is good for at least through the end of the year.

I'm still working out this online selling thing, in fact the selling my art thing in general, so future prices may vary as costs be come clearer. Feedback on shipping options, packaging etc. are always welcome. Just send me a quick email at maria.hicks@nwacupuncture.com. Thanks for your support!

Lineages

As I wrap up four years of intense Classical Chinese medical training, each day presents me with opportunities for reflection and gratitude. The training I've had has been intense with classes in classical Chinese language, biomedical classes (including a cadaver lab), qi gong, theory and practical practice. We have taken between 7-11 classes per quarter (contrast this with my last graduate program where I took an average of 3 classes per quarter and for only 2 years)! I am exhausted to say the least.

This time for wrapping up my degree and saying goodbye to this group of fellow students that has formed such close bonds has given me pause. "Bittersweet" is the best word for what I am feeling. We have really formed a family and I am honored to have been welcomed into several lineages. "Lineage" being the traditional way this medicine has been shared - often from parent to child for generations or master to disciple. One of my teachers, Dr. Lee, recently celebrated with those of us who spent the last year learning formulas with him as part of a formal mentorship elective. His deeply meaningful gesture, handmade hanging gourds with a quote from Confucius, reminded us that his door is always open to us.

It is this close relationship and continued offer of connection that soothes all the bruises from a tough four years. I also think it is what makes the CCM program I studied in special and makes me honored to be a graduate of my program.

Kids and Acupuncture

Gentle Needle-Free Treatments

Did you know that needle-free acupuncture treatments geared specifically to kids exist? I just spent the last weekend studying a kind of Japanese-style treatments (Daishi shoni hara) that are specifically intended for children. The teacher, Sensei Kuwahara, has a long history of treating ADHD in particular.

Treatments are very short (children respond quickly) and pain-free. In fact, the kids can actually have fun during treatments. A variety of conditions can respond quite well.

Over the last two years I've had the good fortune to also be a part of the Shonishin (a Japanese style of pediatric treatment) Club at NCNM. We have hosted guest children and observed their treatments.

I am excited to help either by directly treating kiddos in the future or referring them to the excellent array of providers in our city!

Beautifying

Things are getting done around here!

Thanks to good friends and nice weather, the entrance to our treatment room and the view out the back have gotten a lot of love. In the last few weeks we've:

  • Added light fixtures
  • Cleaned up and mulched the path to the treatment room entrance
  • Finished flooring
  • Landscaped the retaining wall behind the treatment room for a prettier view
  • Received our new appointment reminder cards

You can check it out in person at our open-house graduation/birthday celebration on June 26th from 1-?.

Getting Excited.

Only 38 days to graduation! I have completed the exit exam, my thesis has been defended and I just got business cards in the mail! I still have several board exams to take so I won't be able to practice until those are done, but I'm getting pretty excited to start this new chapter. I have been doing little things to keep me motivated in these last few weeks  - such as designing my business cards.

Save the Date!

Help us celebrate Maria's graduation and tour the new treatment room! Additionally, we will be celebrating Jovi's 40th birthday. Stay tuned for details, but the party will be on:

Afternoon and Evening

Creating Comfort!

Our treatment space is coming along. We are currently in the process of finishing the walls in the room and will be adding flooring this month. Intake chairs and treatment table have been purchased! We are commissioning a handmade coat rack from a felled cedar branch from our property and river rocks that we hand collected. A beautiful large orange planter has been purchased from local nursery, Dennis' 7 Ds for the entry way. We plan to plant a dark purple elderberry bush in the planter! AND, I think we may have chosen some colors for the room. There's lots of work to be done while we finish school and board exams. Stay tuned for more updates.
